It is September 1st and I am declaring a New Year! I thought about this declaration on
Thursday as I drove my husband home from the scene of his car accident - well, actually his "semi tractor trailer" accident! Our car is
totaled but miraculously my husband is fine. The accident is just the most recent event in a long list of personal calamities this year, coupled
with the business challenges 2009 has presented to all of us. I didn't however, officially declare a New Year until yesterday when my sink
disposal shot water and food gunk into my face with enough force to make Old Faithful proud! That was it! I've had enough of 2009, so I am
officially declaring September 1st, the beginning of a New Year!
September always feels like a new beginning anyway, so why not make it official. The
beginning of a new school year creates excitement and anticipation that seem to flow over from kids to adults. I guess no matter how old we get
that September feeling of a new beginning never leaves us. It's time to gather new energy, harness our creativity and look forward to the
opportunities that lie ahead.
Declaring September 1st a New Year, is great way to energize your staff. Put the
anxiety and the paralysis of 2008 behind you. The economy is improving. Why wait three months to adopt a new attitude. Build new
momentum for your company now - start by hosting a New Year's Eve party! The day after Labor Day is a perfect party date!
New beginnings create energy, enthusiasm and excitement. What can you gain by adopting this
new holiday and new attitude:
-
a sales staff that is re-energized to make the "new first quarter" a strong revenue quarter thus
ending the calendar year with a bang
-
your New Year reminds your sales team to talk about budgets for the new year with your
clients and to insure you are in the budget
-
go wild and crazy - consider offering a New Year's package of your product or services - stand
out among the competition
-
focus now on the marketing ideas and campaigns for January - March and finally be ahead of the
game
Put some fun back into your business life. Ditch the "hunker down" mentality. Become a
contrarian and declare September 1st, New Years Day! Let's co-op the back to school excitement for our own purposes. I'm
making my New Year's Resolution right here, right now:
"I, Shelley Fleming Hall, Principal of Catalytic Management and, recognized by my friends as
Queen of the Known Universe, promise:"
- to quit bitching about what I can't control
- to remind myself daily that I could live in Alaska and Sarah Palin could still
be governor
- to celebrate that dark chocolate is a health food by eating it everyday
- to be thankful that through the miracle of modern science, purple pills and hormones, 75 is the
new 45!
